A Day with Whales
By: Laura Bowersox
In all of my life I cannot remember a time that I was in utter amazement like the 4 hours I spent with whales. Whale watching was a life-altering experience. My world was put into perspective and I completely fell in love with these gentle giants.
During my whale watching experience, I had the pleasure of seeing humpback, fin, and minke whales, as well as a basking shark. The two humpback whales were very social and curious about our boat; one even swam right under us! One fin whale came fairly close to the boat, while the minke whales kept their distance. We were able to navigate right next to the basking shark that was feeding. Each experience with the whales and shark was one of wonder and complete happiness. I truly look forward to the day that I can spend a few more hours watching these animals.
It is hard to put into words the completely exhilarating adventure of interacting with whales. The sheer size alone is hard to comprehend until one is swimming right underneath the boat and the fin alone is larger. These animals were so graceful and picturesque that as soon as the boat docked I was ready to go back out.
The positive energy was not solely focused on me; the entire ship seemed to be buzzing after each sighting of a whale. Children and adults alike were in awe of these lovely animals.
Until the next time I can see these amazing creatures, I want to share their beauty. My hope is that others can see these animals for all that they are worth as well; my wish would be that whales are around for many more generations to come.
If these pictures don’t have you completely in love, I urge you to go see them for yourself. You absolutely will not be disappointed.
